Open Thread: Best Suburb In Cape Town?

If we had the cash (and even if the market bombs I still don't think we could afford it) we'd pack up our bags for Upper Fernwood.

For me it will have to be Higgovale.
But I have the same problem, even in a major crash I'll be hard pressed to afford it.

location location location!! It will have to be on the coast Camps Bay, Llandudno or Houtbay
Higgovale is too far away from everything and too steep to get to, too near fire mountains

I think the best are is "De Waterkant". This gay area of Cape Town is hip and happening. Lot's of renovations etc going on at the moment, but the result will be just great with new appartements like "The Rockwell" and the new extension of 'Cape Quater".

The Rockwell unfortunately was not designed properly and they had difficulty seling or letting.
But i agree De Waterkant would be the best place to live in, not far from CBD, right by the stadium, Waterfront, good security, plenty of restaurants etc...

de waterkant? you must be kidding mate. de waterkant is built on top of a gay clubbing district, in case you forget. you try and get some sleep there over a weekend. or parking, for that matter.

and for the love of god: when has 'close proximity to the stadium' meant anything of value to anyone??????!?

with my husband we live in De Waterkant and it has been changing a lot over the years. I have always felt safe with so many security guards. I dont need a car or a taxi when i want to go out for a meal at night, everything is so near.furthermore people there have always been friendly and helpful. with my husband we have lived in so many parts of Cape Town over the years and we have decided to stay in De Waterkant as it is the best.

Higgovale used to be a hidden secret in the city bowl. Then the property developers moved in. R6m houses would be bought and then flattened and horrendous architectural wetdreams would replace them.

I recently left - there were 10 building sites around my house. Crime has gradually increased. First the fences went up, then the electric wiring, now sentry boxes are appearing outside houses. My road had 2 hijackings in a year amongst people I know. My wife was attacked by a knifeman in the road. A neighbour shot a burglar dead in his house one night.

It was once a great place, but the magic has gone.

In fact many of the traditionally great places in Cape Town have recently lost their magic in the property greed of recent years - think the Waterfront, Clifton, even Camps bay.
