A bit off-topic but I still find it all symptomatic. Quoting the article:

"It now costs R627 to fill up a BMW325i — a middle-class favourite — R160 more than in January. A diesel-powered Land Rover Freelander costs R734 to refuel, R241 more than six months ago."

325i's engine is probably the stupidest choice from the whole lineup. It is a 2.5L, 6 cylinder engine that produces a lot less power than 330i (3.0L/6cyl) but uses almost the same amount of fuel (8.4 vs 8.7). If you want an economic car, go for 320i. If you want fun -- 330i. 325i just doesn't make any sense.

Buying a disel car which costs more than an equivalent petrol in SA where disel costs more than petrol also doesn't make any sense.

This shows that SA's so-called middle class tends to think more with their butts than with their heads.

BTW, I am driving new generation MINI. It costs me R300 to fill it up and it lasts for about 2 weeks.

I've been trying to convince the missus that we should sell the cars for bikes. Although with the state of the drivers on our roads I don't know if it would be worth it.

Get the bike!

I bought a bike about 2 years ago.
Best thing I ever did. No more waiting in traffic, no more paying for parking, and your fuel bill gets cut by 2 thirds.

Just take some riding lessons to make sure you know what to do when idiots on the N1 cuts in front of you.
